Edey Wins on Canadian Tour - "Tyler Edey has cruised undefeated through the field at Stix Billiards in Calgary, Alberta to win the second leg of the Stan James Canadian Nine Ball Tour. He defeated Rob Phillips 11-2 in the final round. Edwin Montal finished in third while DJ McGinley took fourth place. Coverage in an upcoming issue of P&B. "

Tip of the Day - Know Your Angles - "Mon. Nov. 21, 2005 (P&B) - For an easy understanding of the angle a ball rebounds off a cushion, remember that cue ball (without any added spin) will rebound from a cushion at the same angle it hits the cushion. However, running english (spin applied on the side of the ball that is the same as the natural angle of deflection) widens the angle and inside english (spin on the side of the ball that is reverse of the natural angle) shortens the angle. Also, the harder the cue ball is hit, the more the angle shortens."

This one hour televised match also features the largest celebrity turn out for a billiards championship. Between November 17th and December 31st, 2005, this one hour championship will be broadcast over 300 times throughout North America and the world. The airings will include the ABC, CBS, and NBC networks and major nation-wide cable stations. "This is pool as it has never been seen before," said International Pool Tour Founder Kevin Trudeau. "It has drama, story lines, and will appeal to all TV viewers, not just billiard fans. I'm proud that a new era of pool on television has just begun." Our first airing on Fox Sports Net (FSN) surpassed our highest expectations for positive viewer response. According to IPT officials, the match had more viewers than even the most optimistic expectations. "The exciting part is that the vast majority of viewers have never watched pool on TV. We are not targeting avid die-hard pool fans but rather people who have never considered watching pool on television. For our first event, we far surpassed our highest expectations. The positive feedback has been overwhelming. Our next event will be even better!" said IPT Founder Kevin Trudeau. International Pool Tour events including the IPT World 8-Ball Championship will be televised throughout North America, the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Major announcements will be made shortly on international broadcast schedules for this match and the entire IPT Tour schedule in international markets throughout the world. Tip of the Day - Aggressive Offense - "Fri. Nov. 18, 2005 (P&B) - If you want to hear someone offer you that "good shot" compliment, than every so often you have to "Go For It". It is wise to play a smart game, but that doesn't mean you never ever take a risky shot that could win you the game. It has often been said that pool is one of those games that is as much an art form as it is a science. So stay in touch with your feelings and when you have the urge to be creative and let it all out for that spectacular shot, GO FOR IT!"

(P&B) Most top players have a Pre-Shot routine which means they set up to every shot the same way (i.e. Look at the shot, chalk there cue, take their stance, use a similar number of warm-up strokes, etc). But top players also have a post-shot routine which includes assessing the outcome of the shot they intended to execute and making a mental notes of what they might do to make it more exact."

Tip of the Day - Keys to Staying Loose - "Tue., Nov. 15, 2005 (P&B) - Many players automatically tighten up when they get down to shoot, when they should be relaxed and loose. The tighter your muscles are, the less chance you will have of executing successfully. Here are two physcial keys that will help your body relax. Try them both. First, if you do feel tight at the table, simply bend your knees. This will automatically loosen up other muscles. Second, when you get down over a shot, open your mouth or "drop your jaw" slightly. A tight jaw (clenched teeth) are part of being too stiff at the table. Try it now and see if you can feel your whole body begin to relax. "

Pool-Billiard on TV Tuesday - "Tue., Nov. 15, 2005 (P&B) - ESPN CLASSIC (11am-12pm) Today you can see another Classic Billiards match from yesteryear. "Cowboy" Jimmy Moore vs Irving "The Deacon" Crane in Atlantic City, NJ"

Tip of the Day - Stationary Elbow - "Mon. Nov. 14, 2005 (P&B) - You can check how level you are swinging your cue by monitoring your elbow. Your elbow should remain stationary with your forearm loosely hanging straight down. Your forearm than swings back and forth like a clock pendulum. Be sure not to raise or lower your elbow. "

World 8-Ball Quarter/Semi Finals - "16 YEAR OLD COULD UNITE 8 & 9 BALL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES   There is now a real possibility that Chia Ching Wu, the sensational 16 year old from Chinese Taipei could do the unimaginable and win both the World 9 Ball Championship AND the World 8 Ball Championship in the same year.   Wu looked calm and played at a good pace throughout his Sem i-Final match with Dutchman Niels Feijen, which he won by a landslide 10-5 score. Feijen looked under pressure as he tried his hardest to make a come back but Wu was just too good.    Wu's Quarter-Final match with Daryl Peach was a much closer affair, it looked certain at one point that was was dead, as Peach was "on the hill" with a commanding score, 9-5 up before Wu's incredible comeback 10-9 win. Peach played exceptionally well but never really had the opportunity to finish the match as Wu controlled the table so well in the closing racks.   Dutchman, Nick van den Berg's route to the final pitched him against Saudi Arabia's Naif Aljaweni in the Quarter-Final. After a slow start the pace picked up and Van den Berg accelerated away to a stong 10-4 victory.   Van den Berg's Semi-Final match was with the audience's favourite from the Philippines, Francisco Bustamante, but Bustamante was utili sing a new soft break style and wasn't making balls on the break. Van den Berg however was having excellent results with a huge powerbreak and this certainly helped win him the match 10-8, along with some solid potting.     QUARTER-FINAL 1:  WU CHIA CHING  10:9  DARYL PEACH   Despite taking a commanding lead against the Taiwanese youngster, (Peach was 9-5 up in the race to ten) there was no stopping Wu's comeback, as he won rack after rack never leaving his opponent a real opportunity to get back into the game.     QUARTER-FINAL 2:  NIELS FEIJEN  10:7  MIKA IMMONEN   Niels Feijen punched the air and let out a victory yell after he sank the final 8 ball that sent him into the Semi-Finals.     QUARTER-FINAL 3:  NICK VAN DEN BERG  10:4  NAIF ALJAWE NI   Saudi Arabia's newest hero, Naif Aljaweni met his match at last, but was ecstatic about getting so far in his first world championship.   QUARTER-FINAL 4:  FRANCISCO BUSTAMANTE  10:5  FABIO PETRONI   Italy's Fabio Petroni looked a little less confident during his battle with Filipino, Francisco Bustamante.     SEMI-FINAL 1:  WU CHIA CHING  10:5  NIELS FEIJEN   Niels was making nothing on his break and Wu simply didn't miss. Every time Wu need to open a cluster he always got some shape on a ball somewhere and seemed to always get good position.   This needs to be stated clearly because Wu plays at a good pace and doesn't ponder on his shots for too long, but it has to be more than luck - it appears that Wu really knows how to control cluster splits to another level of understanding.   His manager watches every single match and writes down notes about particular match plays and they obviously work through the book at some stage after each match.   It's certainly a worthwhile endeavour as Wu's control on the table is second to none.     SEMI-FINAL 2:  NICK VAN DEN BERG  10:8  FRANCISCO BUSTAMANTE   Francisco Bustamante was utilising a soft break from the side of the table and not making balls on the snap. Six times he broke dry, it's actually a tribute to his game that he managed to get this far in the tournament at all, as he has problems with his arm,, thus denying him use of his humungous breaking ability, and has been prevaricating the necessary treatment.   Van den Berg played a solid game and made lots of balls on the break, 5 balls occasionally scurrying off the table on his centre spot break.   THE QUARTER-FINAL RESULTS   Wu Chia Chiang (TPE)  10:9  Daryl Peach (UK)    Niels Feijen (NED)  10:7  Mika Immonen (FIN)  Nick Van Den Berg (NED)  10:4  Naif Alfaweni (KSA)    Francisco Bustamante (PHI)  10:5  Fabio Petroni (ITA)    THE SEMI-FINAL RESULTS Wu Chia Chiang (TPE)  10:5  Niels Feijen (NED)    Nick Van Den Berg (NED)  10:8  Francisco Bustamante (PHI)   THE FINAL   16:00  Wu Chia Ching (TPE) v Nick Van Den Berg (NED)     The Final of The Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships will be played at 6pm this evening (14 November) and broadcast LIVE on DUBAI SPORTS TELEVISION. "

World 8-Ball DAY FOUR - "BUSTAMANTE TAKES ONE STEP CLOSER TO TITLE Filipino superstar Francisco "Django" Bustamante had yet another bittersweet victory at the Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships as he eliminated another good friend and fellow Pinoy, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan. Bustamante rarely looked stressed as he led the way to the 10-6 victory and with this giant step forward into the Quarter-Finals he is now looking like a favourite to take the title and the lion's share of the $110,000 prize fund. NAIF CUTS A SWATHE INTO QUARTER FINALS Saudi Arabia's sole entrant in this event has surprised many people with the quality of his game, so much so that they have already planned a civic reception upon his return, and will be awarding him the equivalent of over $300,000US as a reward for reaching the Quarter-Finals. This is Naif Aljaweni's first attendance at the World 8 Ball Pool Championsh ips, he said, "I didn't know what to expect, I'm just concentrating on my game" and it certainly seems to be working as he eliminated the UAE's last remaining player in the championship, Kuwaitee Jajal Yousif.   Aljaweni is pleased to hear that he will play Nick van den Berg in the Quarter-Finals, as he feels he will be "more confident" against a player that he has already beaten in the group stages. Van den Berg may not prove to be the easiest of opponents though as he says he is, "out for revenge" and has been playing some thrilling 8 ball this week.   SOUQUET CHOKES ON PEACH   In the longest match of the tournament so far, a full three hours for a race to ten racks of pool, Germany's Ralf Souquet looked at every shot twice as he reinforced his reputation as pool's greatest grinder.   The back and forth battle with his opponent, England's Daryl Peach, came to a head when the scores were tied "on the hill" at 9 racks a piece.   Souquet was five balls from victory when he needed to run the cue-ball the full length of the table to get shape on the next ball. Unfortunately, the fast table conditions made this level of accuracy very difficult and he over-ran.his ideal position by a few inches,  the cue-ball coming to rest frozen to an blocking ball.   There was no direct shot available and it was a crucial deciding moment of the match. Thank goodness someone timed it, otherwise we would never know that it took Ralph an unbelievable SEVEN AND A HALF MINUTES to play the next shot as he ponderously wandered around the table, time and time again, calculating his next move.   There was nothing easy about the shot he had to play, an aggressive long rail kick-shot, and the miss cost him the rack and match as Peach "kept his cool" while clearing the table.   HOHMANN'S HEARTACHE   A heartbreaking tale from the match between Germany's former World 9 Ball Champion, Thorsten Hohmann, and Chinese Taipei's current reigning World 9 Ball Champion, Chia Chiang Wu.   The match was tied at "hill-hill" with Hohmann at the table. He is well known as a very methodical player with a superb pre-shot routine and he was taking his time over every shot, double checking every angle, planning his position, and thinking three balls ahead as he started to clear the final table.   When all the hard work was done, and the only ball remaining on the table was the 8, an easy, short distance, straight shot, Thorsten's routine went was completely forgotten as he got down quickly and slapped the ball into the corner pocket with a tiny bit of victorious energy.   A lovely ending to the story… Apart from the fact that the ball didn't even threaten the pocket, it didn't even hit the jaw of the pocket, but contacted the full back rail and bounced one and a half table lengths, eventually coming to rest in front of the side pocket.   The entire audience let out an incredulous gasp, an absolutely unthinkable result for a match at this level. The audience were abuzz with gossip, but composed of professional players, keen amateur players and die hard fans, most of them were very understanding and sympathetic. We've all been in that position and done the same thing at our local club or in a league tournament, but you don't expect a former World Champion to do it too, not when there's a spot in the Quarter-Finals at stake.   Immediately after the shot, Thorsten's temperament was impeccable. One could imagine all sorts of histrionics if we were in his shoes at that moment, but to his great credit there was no fuss or drama, no temper tantrum, not a single curse, no cue throwing, not even a frown on his face. He immediately realised his mistake, and like the true gentleman he is, he took his seat and waited for Wu to play the 8-ball. Wu, of course, is the only player here with the ability to unite  the World 9 Ball Championship title (which he won earlier this year) with the World 8 Ball Championship title, and he will be delighted that this dream is still alive.     FABULOUS FABIO   The best pool player in the history of Italian pool, "Fabulous" Fabio Petroni, has progressed to the quarter final stages of the Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships with a resounding win over Hungary's Vilmos Foldes.   Petroni was once again "all-business" as he went about his work, and has been displaying a new, more focused attitude since his arrival in Fujairah.   LAST 16 RESULTS   The top 16 surviving players were seeded using their results from the previous two days of group play and then drawn against random players from the lower 16.   Wu Chia Chiang (TPE)  10:9  Thorsten Hohmann (GER)  Daryl Peach (UK)  10:9  Ralf Souquet (GER)  Mika Immonen (FIN)  10:7  MarcoTschudi (SUI)  Niels Feijen (NED)  10:6  Satoshi Kawabata (JPN)  Naif Alfaweni (KSA)  10:8  Jalal Yousif Nick Van Den Berg (NED)  10:4  Christian Reimering (GER)  Fabio Petroni (ITA)  10:5  Vilmos Foldes (HUN) Francisco Bustamante (PHI)  10:6  Alex Pagulayan (PHI)    SCHEDULE Today's line-up of matches consist of the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals and will commence today (13 November) with the Quarter-Finals at 4pm. Selected matches will be broadcast LIVE on DUBAI SPORTS TELEVISION. THE QUARTER FINALS   16:00  Wu Chia Ching (TPE) v Daryl Peach (UK)   16:00  Mika Immonen (FIN)  v  Niels Feijen (NED)    16:00  Naif Aljaweni (KSA) v Nick Van Den Berg (NED)   16:00  Fabio Petroni (ITA) v Francisco Bustamante (PHI) THE SEMI-FINALS   18:30* Semi-Final 1 21:00* Semi-Final 2   *The Semi-Final timings are provisional and will occur on a roll-on-roll-off basis with the the first match scheduled to take place 30 minutes after the first pair of Quarter-Finals have finished and are dependent on televsion scheduling changes.     THE FINAL   The Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships Final will be played tomorrow (Monday 14 November) at 4pm, followed by a player banquet and presentation ceremony.   "

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2005 - "P&B"

World 8-Ball DAY THREE - "REYES, TOT AND HUNDAL HAVE A BAD DAY!   Day three of The Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates has been a bad day for pool fans as three top players got their marching orders in emphatic style, from the "race to ten", last 32 stage of the tournament.   Efren Reyes, reigning World 8 Ball Pool Champion, saw his hopes of retaining the title dashed by fellow Filipino Francisco Bustamante. Reyes looked a little off form and uncharacteristically missed a couple of shots that should have had "guaranteed" written on them. In contrast, Bustamante played a devastating game from start to finish, and the combination of these two factors resulted in the very one-sided looking 10-1 result.     HUNGARIANS CLASH   Hungary's Sandor Tot was also on the receiving end of a 10-1 thrashing at the hands of a countryman, as Vilmos Foldes annihilated the challenge from one of Europe's top players.   Foldes will need to draw energy and confidence from this win as he will now meet the very focused looking Italian, Fabio Petroni, in the last 16 of the event.   PETRONI HALTS HUNDAL'S HOPES   It was Petroni who ruined the day of the UK's hotshot Raj Hundal. "Fabulous Fabio" always appears intensely focused whilst at the table, but off the table he is often found clowning around, entertaining the fans and players with his happy-go-lucky character. This time however it appears that Fabio means business and he is not here just to play, but here to win!   Hundal has been playing inconsistently at this event, after miscueing an incredible five times in one of his matches in the group stages he is lucky to have made it this far. After having the leather tip of his cue reshaped on a lathe by the on-site cuesmith, Hundal was hoping that he had got over the worst of his problems and could get a good result here, but ultimately Petroni proved too strong at this event. Great Britain's hopes of a World 8 Ball pool Champion now fall on the broad shoulders of Blackpool's Daryl Peach who will play Ralf Souquet in the Last 16 stage of the event.   "ICEMAN" IMMONEN GETS A CLOSE SHAVE 2001 World 9 Ball Pool Champion, Mika Immonen had a very tough time playing local hero Elmer Haya from Kuwait.   The Finnish player nicknamed "The Iceman" because of his cool nerveless playing style was taken to the wire and had to use all of his experience and skill to win the match with a 10-9 score line.     LAST 32 RESULTS   The top 16 surviving players were seeded using their results from the previous two days of group play and then drawn against random players from the lower 16.   THE LAST 32   Wu Chia Ching (TPE) 10 :7 Alex Lely (NED) Thorsten Hohmann (GER) 10:5 Elvis Calasang     Daryl Peach (UK) 10:6 Ismael Paez (MEX)        Ralf Souquet (GER) 10:5 Chang Jung Lin (    TPE) Mika Immonen (FIN) 10:9 Elmer Hoya (KWT) MarcoTschudi    (SUI) 10:9 Jorn Kaplan (GER) Niels Feijen (NED) 10:3 Patrick Ooi (MAS) Satoshi Kawabata (JPN) 10:2 Ibrahim Bin Amir (MAS) Jalal Yousif 10:9 Hisashi Kusano (JPN) Naif Aljaweni    (KSA) 10:9 Ernesto Dominguez (MEX) Nick Van Den Berg (NED) 10:7 Luc Salvas (CAN) Christian Reimering (GER) 10:6 Michael Schmidt    (GER) Vilmos Foldes    (HUN) 10:1 Sandor Tot (HUN) Fabio Petroni    (ITA) 10:4 Raj Hundal (UK) Alex Pagulayan (PHI) 10:2 James Ortega Francisco Bustamante    (PHI) 10:1 Efren Reyes (PHI)   THE LAST 16 DRAW   17:00 Wu Chia Ching (TPE) v Thorsten Hohmann (GER) 15:00 Daryl Peach (UK) v Ralf Souquet (GER) 19:00 Mika Immonen (FIN) v MarcoTschudi (SUI) 17:00 Niels Feijen (NED) v Satoshi Kawabata (JPN) 15:00 Jalal Yousif v Naif Aljaweni     (KSA) 19:00 Nick Van Den Berg (NED) v Christian Reimering (GER) 19:00 Vilmos Foldes    (HUN) v Fabio Petroni (ITA) 21:00 Alex Pagulayan (PHI) v Francisco Bustamante (PHI)   Play resumes today (12 November) at 3pm with a local derby guaranteeing a place in the Quarter Finals for the winner of the Jalal Yousif v Naif Aljaweni match, DUBAI SPORTS TELEVISION have decided to change their schedule and broadcast this match LIVE before the big football match this afternoon.   "

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2005 - "P&B"

Tip of the Day - Positive Thought 3 - "Fri, Nov. 11, 2005 (P&B) - To add a bit of confidence to your execution, visualize the entire shot you intend to peform. Now you will be able to commit to it as you get down over the cue ball."

World 8-Ball DAY TWO - ""EFREN-MANIA" STRIKES AT FUJAIRAH POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS!   Efren Reyes was mobbed by his adoring fans today after surviving the "Judgement Day" cull, securing his berth into the last 32 remaining players at the Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championships in Fujairah.   Playing to a "standing-room-only" crowd of predominantly Filipino well-wishers cheering and clapping every shot he made, Efren cruised to an effortless 8-3 win over Great Britain's Kevin Smith.   As soon as the final 8 ball was potted the crowd simultaneously rose to their feet whooping and screaming, everyone clamouring to congratulate him and shake the hand of their idol.   Efren generously shook every single hand thrust at him, gracing people with a comment here and a grin there, as he tried to slowly make his way out of the building, only to find more people waiting for him outside with their cameras and requests for photos.   It's no exaggeration to say that he is absolutely idolised by his fans, he even commands an awed respect from many of his opponents, no other player can draw the crowds like Efren.   However the drawing of the last 32 match-ups has delivered a sickening blow for the Filipino fans and players alike, as the worst possible combination of matches materialised pitching Reyes against his countryman and friend Francisco Bustamante, and the winner of that match will meet another Filipino, Alex Pagulayan, in the last 16.   So unlike last year's event, where all four semi-finalists were from the Philippines (including Reyes, Bustamante and Pagulayan), this year, due to the unluckiest draw ever witnessed, only one of them has the mathematical possibility of reaching the final stages as they eliminate each other from the draw.   It's not just the Filipinos who suffer this way either, the duo of Hungarian players, Vilmos Foldes and Sandor Tot and two German players, Christian Reimering and Michael Schmidt also meet each other at the last 32 stage.     NICK VAN DEN BERG – "AMAZING"   The most technically perfect match of the tournament so far, and it's unlikely to be surpassed, was the clash between Dutchman Nick van den Berg and talented South African, Jason Theron.   The players shook hands, Theron won the lag, and proceeded to run four racks without allowing his opponent to the table. His fifth break came up dry and he took his seat never to play another shot as, incredibly, Nick van den Berg ran out the entire match with a perfect 8-pack.   Peter Aprile, one of the three international Senior Referees flown to the Emirates to oversee this tournament, said it was the most amazing game he had ever seen… Praise indeed from a professional pool watcher.     WU CAN DO!   2005 World 9 Ball Pool Champion, Chiang-Chia Wu, has proven that he has ambitions to win the 8 Ball Championship too.   I'm not going to say that he's "playing with a maturity beyond his years", because he isn't. Despite his large physical stature, he looks as young as he really is (16 years and 9 months) and he isn't playing with the nonchalant confidence that he exhibited at the 9 Ball World Championships in Taiwan, but the prodigy from Taipei Province is getting the job done none the less.   Accompanied by his manager on this trip, Wu is still studying at High School and like all 16 year olds, he is finding it difficult to get the time to practice alone as much as he would like.   He has a tough draw in the shape of Dutchman, Alex Lely, and although he doesn't speak much English, I was able to glean that he thinks he can win this event, and you'd be surprised how many don't think they can!     CHAMAT OUT – SHOCK! Almost all of the "big guns" are still in the tournament, with one exception. The biggest upset of the tournament so far is the news that Sweden's star player, Marcus Chamat, has not managed to survive the "Judgement Day" hatchet.   "Napoleon" has one of the most consistent games on the circuit, an omnipresent member of the last 16 at the World 9 Ball Championships, and another one of those cheerful "personality" players that encourages the fans to make special efforts to catch his games, he will be sorely missed.     RESULTS – DAY TWO   This year the 64 players have been divided into 8 groups of 8 players, playing a double elimination "two wins to qualify/two losses and you're out" system to whittle the field down to the final 32 players in a total of 80 matches, 40 yesterday and the final 40 today… Here are the results from Day Two's matches.   Group 1 James Ortega  8:1  Irfan Ahmed Khan Kevin Smith  8:4  Jun Bongabong   James Ortega  8:6  Mike Massey Efren Reyes  8:3  Kevin Smith     Group 2 Patrick Ooi  8:5  Mohammad Al Hosani Shervin Rahimi  8:0  Phil-Hyun Cho   Patrick Ooi  8:7  Phil Riley Chang-Jung Lin  8:5  Shervin Rahimi     Group 3 Jason Theron  8:5  Omran Saleem Radoslaw Babica  8:2  Phil Wilkinson   Nick van den Berg  8:4  Jason Theron  Daryl Peach  8:4  Radoslaw Babica      Group 4 Sandor Tot  8:1  Ismael Yaqoob Kevin Hew  8:6  Max Eberle   Sandor Tot  8:7 Joven Bustamante Marco Tschudi  8:5  Kevin Hew     Group 5 Alex Pagulayan  8:6  Jeong-Young Hwa Jorn Kaplan  8:4  Michael Schmidt    Tomasz Kaplan  8:4  Joebert Panga Chiang-Chia Wu  8:5  Amin Fikree   Michael Schmidt  8:4  Tomasz Kaplan  Chiang-Chia Wu  8:2  Jeong-Young Hwa     Group 6 Luc Salvas  8:4  Jalal Yousif Liu Cheung-Chuan  8:6  Ralf Souquet
